As a parent now for approximately sixteen years I can actually understand the fine balance between toddler discipline, and squashing the spirit of a child.
When my first daughter Ellie was born I was totally new at this thing called parenting, and I discovered most of the parenting books to be contradictory at very best and some simply silly at worst. This might seem harsh for some new parents who are looking for a right path as a parent.
I understand being a parent is really a tricky business particularly when it comes to discipline and especially toddler discipline, if you go for the free range approach and just let your children somewhat develop in the vain hope all is going to be fine, then you are likely to be living some kind of living nightmare, with your child completely dictating the agenda and totally running your life.
On the other hand if you go for total discipline as preferred by many in the past, then you be in danger of totally losing the real essences of your children's character.
I would like to say that their is a holy grail of toddler discipline, that you may follow and tick off the list as you go, and believe me a lot of individuals would try to sell it to you that way. The way I see it, it's about two core things boundaries and communication in particular as your child starts to get to the toddler stage and further than.
I still find this to be the case with my 16 and 13 old children, I have what i call my fall back position, that's as far as I will go on any given issue, that's my boundary that in many instances my children over a few years have learnt to understand, however within those boundaries their is a lot of opportunities of freedom of expression and chances to grow as individuals which I personally feel is vital.
To do this though good communication is key while implementing toddler discipline, to this end I have been highly lucky to have learnt things for example NLP which have helped me shape my vocabulary skills and body language to get maximum engagement with my kids.
